For those starting a personal project

If you’re working on your portfolio or planning your very first personal project, I’d like to share some thoughts that I believe may be helpful. So today, I decided to write a slightly longer piece.

When I was taking a graphic design course in university, my professor once mentioned that, when he was younger, he used to visit record stores and collect CDs purely based on album covers that looked visually compelling. He said that albums with strong artwork often tended to contain good music as well (I’m not entirely convinced about that part 😅). But what stayed with me was this: the album art he collected at the time eventually became a valuable asset for his creative work.

It didn’t resonate with me back then—my interest was more in moving images than in graphics—so I let it pass. But one day, the memory came back unexpectedly, and over time I began to understand what he meant.

From my freshman year to senior year, I spent a lot of time immersed in emo hip-hop. Looking back on my work now, I’ve realized that the album covers from that period had unconsciously influenced my visuals—composition, colors, even the overall mood.

Don’t these scenes look similar? The red tones and the framing...

This scene, too — the setup feels quite alike.

And this one as well.

Even here, I see some connection.

It’s not just music. Everything I’ve watched, listened to, felt, and emotionally reacted to slowly finds its way into my work.

For example, a particular scene from the webtoon Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint became an important reference in one of my projects.

This last scene is actually an homage to the anime Evangelion.

Many people think watching Netflix or playing games is simply “wasting time.” My parents used to think so too. But in our field, those experiences can be transformed into creative output. I personally believe that the more we watch, listen, and emotionally respond, the more directly it influences our work.

I created my graduation project based on Mario, a Nintendo game I played in elementary school — and that project eventually led to my current job.

These days, I notice many creators sourcing references primarily from existing motion graphics work. That has value, of course. But repeated too often, it makes many portfolios start to resemble each other. Even with strong technical skills, if your work feels similar to others, it can sometimes be undervalued.

At some point, I think it helps to step away — even briefly — from tools and motion graphics and ask yourself:

“What did I use to love?”
“What do I genuinely enjoy now?”
“What do I want to create?”
“Who am I?”

If even just a small piece of what you truly love finds its way into your work, I believe you’ll create a portfolio that stands apart — one that feels uniquely yours.

Wishing strength and inspiration to everyone preparing their projects.
