The path to the 1% in the industry

While preparing an online course, I came across a video titled “How to Become the Top 1% in Any Field.” I found the content deeply resonant and strongly applicable to our industry, so I’d like to share my takeaways with you today.

I’m not claiming that I’m already in the top 1%, nor am I in a position to clearly define what "top 1%" truly means in our field. However, I realized that my growth process and the way my thoughts have evolved align closely with the framework introduced in the video. So I’ll walk you through it using my own experience as an example.

Developing expertise in any field is difficult—it can feel overwhelming. I’ve gone through that stage myself.

But as you’ll see in the above graph, when you put in the effort, your level of expertise initially grows very rapidly.

For example, when someone decides to become a motion designer or a 3D artist and starts attending classes or watching online tutorials, they begin acquiring new skills almost daily. Yesterday, you may not have even known how to open Cinema 4D. Today, you’re able to render. Soon after, you’re compositing simple scenes in After Effects.

However, this is not the stage where rewards begin. There are many people who can reach this level, and nowadays, getting to this point is relatively easy. Financial and professional rewards typically start to increase only after expertise begins to saturate.

That’s where I found myself. I study harder than I ever have, but skill progression is no longer as steep—likely because I already possess a strong base of accumulated knowledge.

1. Developing Expertise

The foundation is, of course, building technical proficiency.
In our industry, this doesn't necessarily require a university degree. There are great academies and online tutorials—and that’s where I began as well.

However, it’s said that pure technical proficiency alone can take you only up to around the top 20%. I personally agree. Knowing how to use tools and execute assignments isn’t enough to truly compete in the job market.

2. Convergence (Polymath)

To move from the top 20% to the top 10%, you need convergence.
This means combining your core technical skillset with knowledge or experiences from other fields.

It’s not just about producing clean 3D work. It’s about integrating your personal background—emotions felt while watching films or anime, the pressure experienced while studying for exams, rhythm from musical training, and so on. This multidisciplinary approach is often referred to as “polymath.”

Let me use my graduation project as an example.
At the time, I assessed myself as being around the top 20% among students. But I noticed that most students lacked experience with character animation or rigging. So I focused there.
In other words: combine above-average skill with a capability that others rarely use.

I was also unconsciously drawing from personal experiences:
  • Editing and directing insights gained while assisting with my father's YouTube channel (now over 200,000 subscribers)
  • Watching films in theaters every week from elementary school
  • Storytelling intuition developed when I wanted to become a webcomic artist
  • The rhythm and structural awareness shaped by years of Nintendo gameplay

These influences naturally enhanced my editing and direction. As a result, my graduation project positioned me not as someone being selected but as someone who could choose. I entered a level where my expertise could be monetized—and became employable.

The next step is interaction with professionals.

Once you reach a level where your work is portfolio-worthy and employment or freelance work becomes possible, you should actively engage with other professionals in the field. Learning from those who’ve already achieved the goals you aim for offers value you cannot gain from tutorials or lectures alone.

Fortunately, in our industry, events like Motion Plus Design and other seminars provide accessible networking opportunities. Personally, the insights I gained after starting full-time work were much deeper than those I got before employment—because your ability to interpret information evolves as your level of expertise increases.

Independent Projects (Hypothesis-Based Growth)

The next phase is pursuing self-directed projects.
This is not just creating, but setting hypotheses and testing them. Failure is acceptable—in fact, at this stage, failure builds depth.

Let’s look at my recent project, “Disenchanted.” Here are the actual hypotheses I defined:
  1. Recent projects feel stylistically similar—what if I reinterpret past aesthetics, but in my own way?
  2. What happens if I intentionally create something timeless, rather than trend-driven?
  3. If I focus on a distinct visual identity and personal narrative instead of relying solely on visual stimulation, how will people react?
  4. If I incorporate my sister’s artwork, could it offer aesthetic authenticity and deeper meaning?
  5. What if I design a film-style poster to frame the project as a cinematic piece?
  6. If I create an explanation video, not just the final film, will it help people connect more deeply with the work?
  7. This project will consume a lot of resources and likely won’t generate income—but if I repeat this process three times, will it change my life?

The actual outcomes far exceeded expectations.

✔ Praise from senior artists I’ve long admired
✔ Invitations to seminars and online courses
✔ Job and project offers, both locally and internationally
✔ Contacts from abroad
✔ Strong resonance with the explanatory film
✔ Positive responses from film festivals
✔ And in truth—my life has already begun to change from just this one project

What I gained from this process was far beyond technical improvement.
Regardless of whether each hypothesis succeeds, documenting everything—through writing, process files, and personal reflection—eventually turns into content, lectures, or even a book. When that happens, your expertise begins to generate additional income—whether you’re actively working or not.

I deeply resonate with this theory and genuinely believe that if I continue executing projects like this a few more times, I’ll eventually reach the area I’ve dreamed of. Following this approach is not easy—it requires more than simple perseverance. It demands sacrifice. I’ve had to give up many things myself. But if you truly want to become part of the top 1% in this industry, this framework may offer value.

I still have a long way to go, but I wanted to share this content as I believe it’s worth considering.
Thank you for reading.
